Immediately off the coast of a landmass is a series of rock formations rising out of the ocean known to the local civilisation as the Three Witnesses. This formation consists of three large rocks, with the largest in the centre, the second largest to its right (left as viewed from the coast) and slightly farther back, and the smallest to its left (right as viewed from the coast) and slightly farther back than the second. It is believed these rocks were placed by the Creator(s) as testimony to the Act(s) of Creation.
Archaeological expeditions have shown that the Three Witnesses have long been the site of ritual practices: in the earliest days three sacrificial victims were slaughtered annually, one each upon the tops of the Witnesses, which were never approached otherwise. It is postulated that over time this practice somehow evolved into the modern custom of annual swimming races around the Three Witnesses, but as the locals are notoriously tight-lipped about their ritual practices there is no way for Outsiders to know for sure.
