The Canon is the material accepted as officially part of the fictional multiverse of the Greater Game. The Canon consists of Themes, Moves, and Clarifications.[1]

Text

The first entry of the Canon is the theme Foundation by Dominick.

Foundation. Let us start with the underlying mechanics of the world. Does physics work the same in this universe as in our universe? Is time travel possible? Is there magic in this universe? Are there multiple realms or planes of existence? By Rule of Fun, let at least part of this world be habitable for corporeal human-like life.

The second entry of the Canon is the move The Aether by Trafalgar:

The Aether. The world is part of a multiverse of parallel dimensions or universes. Running between and through them is a mysterious substance or medium called the "aether." The aether is strange, with properties reminiscent of both a fluid and a solid as if they were interdimensional plate tectonics. Naturally-occurring "cracks" can appear it in, resulting in movement between dimensions. It is also possible for intelligent beings to figure out how to make artificial cracks, or "schists." Our primary world is in one of these dimensions, but the Aether gives it a mechanism to connect to other worlds and draw material from them.

The third entry of the Canon is the move Exodimensional Space by Sabiki.

Exodimensional space. The exodimensional space (EDS) is the space in which the entire multidimensional system is located. It is a space where physical laws break, and matter cannot exist. Instead, to communicate between universes and mobilize matter between dimensions requires the aether, a substance that flows from the entirety of the multiverse and contains the universes, working as a shell for the matter not to scatter and disappear in the EDS, and transports matter through naturally formed "cracks" across the inside of the aetherial columns that form between aetherial shells. This allowed entire universes to disappear, or simple transfer matter and energy to another. Multiple artistic interpretations have visualized the EDS as an endless, pitch black emptiness in which bubbles of aether contain stars and galaxies, all of existence, and connect with one another in interuniversal flows of aether.

The fourth entry of the Canon is the move The Potential by Shimon.

Interwoven throughout the fabric of the inhabited worlds is a force of nature known as the Potential. It is by harnessing this Potential that certain species of intelligent being are able to perform acts of what we might otherwise call magic. Each member of those species possesses an organ called the auní which serves as the means for interaction with the Potential. In those with stronger auní the ability to make use of the Potential is stronger, but their susceptibility to it is commensurately stronger as well. Those rare individuals without functioning auní are referred to as unsensed (analogous to blindness vis-à-vis sight or deafness vis-à-vis hearing) and cannot interact with the Potential at all: they are both entirely incapable of using magic and entirely unaffected by it.

The fifth entry of the Canon is the move /Ro:paR/ by Andy.

/Ro:paR/. All races and species of sentient beings on our target planet value /Ro:paR/ (IPA) as the highest goal of their existences, and indeed believe it to be the thing that the Aether and the Potential exist to promote; actions are evaluated according to whether they accord with Ro:paR or combat it. They pronounce it alike though they may use different scripts and languages. Ro:paR may be translated as 'zeal for right harmony', 'just anger' or 'passion for justice'. However, different categories of being on the planet think of themselves as having Ro:paR of different qualities - notably, some having 'patient Ro:paR' and some 'urgent Ro:paR'.

The sixth entry of the Canon is the move The Dimensions by Wammywoo.

The Dimensions. The Potential is a mystical force that through practice allows the beings to manifest thought into reality whether it is changing the perception of reality or reality itself. This is true in the material dimension Khuám however this dimension has a mirror dimension Tæghó that is intertwined with Khuám. Tæghó is where the Potential stems from and is connected to Khuám. Threads called Myáku is what connects the potential in Tæghó to each being's auní in Khuám.

The seventh entry of the Canon is the move The Ethereal Field by Dominick.

Move 5. The Ethereal Field. The ethereal field permeates the entire multiverse. In ordinary space, the ethereal field is balanced. However, in the exodimensional space, the ethereal field is more chaotic. Cracks and schists also have strong ethereal fields which attract or repulse objects through them. While the Aether creates ethereal fields between dimensions, people can use the Potential to manipulate ethereal fields within a dimension to create pockets of ethereal flow, which is the basis of teleportation and telekinesis.
